    bleeding gums

About five years ago my gums started getting swollen and will bleed if i push on it. It only happens in the winter time. I find that if I squeeze my gums untill it does bleed and get whatever it is in there out , use floss, and peroxide that the swelling will go down in a few days, but if i don't squeeze then the swelling gets worse. I brush my teeth everyday. No, I don't take the best care of my teeth because I only brush once a day in the mornings and floss every other day or when I have food stuck in my teeth (which is a lot and i can't stand that feeling). I'm 26 and I do smoke but surely i can't have gum cancer yet??? This could also be abscess, maybe? that i get out on my own? i do have a wisdom tooth that hasn't been pulled yet and is decayed, i also have a molar that has a cavity which hasn't been pulled yet either. my insurance does not cover dental care.

HI there! Flossing, brushing and swishing the mouth in evening may help keep bacteria load down for the night hours. I would not use peroxide it can damage red blood cells. If you quit smoking you will have money for dental care you desperately need. One person told me their cigarette habit cost more than $140 per month! Maybe in about a month or 2 you can have the money then if everytime it was time to buy a carton instead of buying the carton it was put in a special account. Think how much you could have in the bank in one year! Smoking has been said by the Surgeon General to cause fatal effects anyway.

Hi there, Your gums really shouldn't be bleeding. And I agree with SJB, you really should quit smoking. I am not sure how much you smoke a day or even how much they are where you live. But hypothetically, if you smoke a pack of cigs a day at $5 a pack that would equal $1825. Not only it is not good for you, but it isn't good for your oral health either. I use to smoke as well and my hygienist told me that it constricts the blood vessels in your gums and doesn't allow them to heal on their own. I know that with 2 times a day brushing, flossing and mouthwash, and quiting smoking can really help your gums and teeth. My gums look so much better then they did when I smoked the half of a pack a day. Granted I have other issues that coming up that stem from things that happened 10 years ago but my gums are healthy.

    Re: bleeding gums

    Hi Becca,

It sounds as though you have gingivitis or the start of a serious periodontal condition, which is an infection that spreads along the periodontal ligament from one tooth to the next and can cause symptoms exactly as you describe. It really takes a dentist to clean your teeth and remove the plaque that gets down between the tooth surface and the gum where you can't reach it.

I urge you STRONGLY to go to a dentist for a thorough cleaning and xrays to assess your supporting bone. When you start getting infections along the gum it's because the plaque is starting to dissolve the bone that holds the tooth and forming pockets along the gumline. Without proper treatment the tooth will fail shortly after. After awhile there simply won't be enough bone there to hold it in.

Please make an appt. to see your dentist NOW. In the meantime, brushing at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes, and flossing every day is imperative.
I can't urge you enough to get to a dentist, though!

My best to you and let us know how you do,
    Gellia

    Gellia,
Thank you! That was the answer I was looking for and very informative. Finals are coming up here in a week but I will go to the dentist over Christmas break. I don't want to end up with false teeth by the time I'm 30. One reason I only brush my teeth once a day is because it hurts. But I will do it nevertheless.

    Re: bleeding gums

I Agree with Gellia and Armywife2007 only the dentist can look in that mouth to decide what type of care it needs and to what extent the mouth has been affected. I was trying to explain what might be done to get money to see one.
